CHEM 570 Nanotechnology for Teachers is a free course for in service teachers that is offered on Thursday evenings during the spring semester at Rice University.
Participants will be provided with light dinners, and earn 45 CPE credits and a $300 stipend. In addition, teachers can receive Rice University graduate credit hours at a reduced tuition rate.
This course, which is supported by the National Science Foundation, covers new developments in nanotechnology and links this research to core science concepts.
CHEM 570 meets from January 15-April 16 on Thursday evenings (with the exception of HISD's spring break) from 6:00-8:30 p.m. on Rice's campus.
Participants in the spring course are eligible to apply to CBEN's research internship for teachers which includes a $3500 stipend (see http://cben.rice.edu/teacherinternship.aspx)
Content in Nanotechnology for Teachers aligns with many of the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills for Science (TEKS) guidelines including the following:
IPC: motion, waves, energy transformations, properties of matter, changes in matter;
Biology: structures and functions of cells and viruses; cells, tissues, and organs; nucleic acids and genetics;
Environmental Systems: interrelationships among resources and environmental systems;
Chemistry: characteristics of matter; energy transformations during physical and chemical changes; atomic structure; periodic table of elements;
Physics: conservation of energy and momentum; force; thermodynamics; characteristics and behavior of waves; and quantum physics
